An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Whenever looking to buy a vending business, you should beware about Blue Skies, term used in vending for business opportunity scams.

Advertisements promising big funds for part-time or minimal work are scam-alerts. You cannot buy some machines and put them out to work, and then sit on your couch, watching TV and drinking your favourite beer all day. It doesn’t work that way because you always have to work for your meal ticket, independently of the business that you’re in.

According to the book Start your own Vending Business, here are a few basic tips on spotting a Blue Sky opportunity, drawn from the FTC publication Business Opportunities: Avoiding Vending Machine and Display Rack Scams:

o        Visit the locations promised by the locator. Ask the owner or manager about traffic, buying patterns, competition and other relevant information;

o        Contact the marketing department of any company whose brand names are used in advertisements. Evaluate if they are actually sponsoring or backing the outfit in question;

o        Ask industry and trade associations about the company;

o        Avoid trusting references provided by the seller unless you have proof that they are not a friend, employee or hired for the job;

o        Do compare prices, just like you would with any other item;

o        Talk with people who are already in business through industry and trade associations;

o        Avoid any opportunity that claims there’s no selling involved in the operation of a vending business;

o        Persevere until the right opportunity is found.
